Today, Panasas® announced a new program to help customers upgrade the reliability of their Panasas ActiveStor® scale-out NAS storage systems to gain the full benefit of PanFS RAID 6+.

Our current customers have deployed Panasas systems for many years based on per-file RAID 5 data protection with great success. After all, Panasas per-file RAID 5 provided dual parity data protection (horizontal plus vertical parity) for an overall level of data protection comparable to a traditional RAID 6 approach. However, with the PanFS 6...

We’re pleased to release the first in a three-part series of video Q&A sessions with Panasas Chief Scientist Dr. Garth Gibson. The series will offer a candid look at the underpinnings of the PanFS file system and what sets it apart from other approaches to data management and data protection. In the first video in the series, Dr. Gibson discusses Object RAID, erasure codes and the parallelization of per-file data protection and reconstruction that makes Panasas RAID 6+ the most efficient and...

Boosting storage performance has been a top priority ever since Panasas was founded more than ten years ago. Today, it’s more important than ever. In the IDC report “HPC End-User Study of the Storage and Interconnects Used in Technical Computing” (Sept. 2013), analysts highlighted the increasing focus that storage performance is getting with storage buyers:

Storage and data management have arguably become the most important HPC "pain points" already, with access densities a particularly troubling issue. […]Many HPC sites are doubling their storage capacities every two to three years...

Earlier this month the Panasas team trekked to Vancouver, B.C. for the 41st SIGGRAPH conference and exhibition. According to organizers, this year’s gathering hosted more than 14,000 attendees from 75 countries – truly an international event and an unparalleled setting to learn more about the opportunities and challenges that are driving graphics development and video, film and video game production today.

Of the many professionals we spoke with, there was a common thread among all of them: whatever their industry or workflow, everyone had either reached the point at which their...

Having built a good portion of my career in the storage industry, it’s clear to me that storage vendors generally just don’t like talking about some topics. Companies aren’t shy to brag about storage throughput or IOPS performance, their attractive price per terabyte, or how their product is so easy to use. Panasas is no different here – we are also quick to tell you about the benefits in our ActiveStor platform.

But when it comes to discussing what can actually go wrong with their product, most storage vendors understandably find it an uncomfortable subject and go silent, despite...

Another week – another big European trade show!

In late June, the Panasas team had the pleasure of participating in ISC’14: the International Supercomputing Conference in Leipzig. The show hosted a solid turnout of professionals from enterprise and research institutions as well as industry media and analysts, all there to take a deep dive into the trends and technologies that are driving this accelerating field. I daresay they were not disappointed!

From the conversations we enjoyed in the Panasas booth, it was clear that storage challenges are an increasingly high priority...

Along with the official start of summer in California, June marked a significant step forward for our hybrid scale-out NAS product line.  This month, we announced ActiveStor 16 with PanFS 6.0 and RAID 6+ data protection. This powerful combination yields a high-density platform and industry-leading reliability at scale while ensuring the manageability and performance that are essential for big data deployments.

I’m overjoyed to see the industry...

Earlier this month, scientists and business leaders from the oil and gas industry came together in Amsterdam at the annual EAGE Conference and Exhibition to discuss trends and technologies in energy exploration. We were pleased to again exhibit and support this event.

This year’s exhibit floor was dominated by two recurring themes: one, the wonderful Dutch countrymen and women proudly supporting their beloved Oranje in their quest for World Cup glory; and second, geoscientists and engineers looking for ways to streamline and accelerate analysis and discovery for oil and gas...

There’s no question that this is a big announcement: not only have we announced our new flagship platform ActiveStor 16 but we also announced PanFS 6.0, the biggest step forward for our storage operating system in many years.

ActiveStor 16 builds on our successful ActiveStor 14 hybrid scale-out NAS platform, improving both density and performance. Leveraging 6TB helium-filled hard drive technology from HGST, ActiveStor 16 now attains 122.4TB per shelf (50% higher density). The ActiveStor 16 director blade also sports a faster CPU and four times the memory for improved file system...

Our team recently returned from Boston, where Panasas was an exhibitor at the Bio-IT World Conference and Expo put on by Cambridge Healthtech Institute. As always it was a rich, informative event and in many ways, an annual bellwether for the state of research technology in the biosciences. Panasas has participated in Bio-IT World for several years and I think that gives us a unique perspective on the evolution of this growing market.

Suffice it to say that while the inherent challenges and opportunities that first attracted Panasas to Bio-IT World remain quite similar – including...
