Achieving Breakthrough Performance with ANSYS Software and Panasas
(A Panasas, Inc. and ANSYS Joint Webinar Event)

Recorded:
Thursday, April 9, 2009

Duration: 53 minutes

Speakers:

  • Barbara Hutchings, Director of Strategic Partnerships, ANSYS, Inc.
Barbara Hutchings manages strategic alliances at ANSYS, Inc. and has been involved in the Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software business for 25 years. With direct experience in the application of CAE technology to engineering product development, Barbara is currently involved with strategic partners in the high-performance computing field, with the goal of helping customers get maximum benefit from their CAE investment.

  • Stan Posey, Director of Industry Development, Panasas
Stan Posey joined Panasas in 2007 with over 20 years of experience in various roles of CAE and HPC industry and applications development with organizations such as SGI, Control Data Corporation and US DOE Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Stan holds a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and has co-authored several papers for HPC research journals and technical conferences.

Abstract:
CAE parallel performance and job turn-around times continue to be an important factor behind engineering decisions to develop FEA and CFD models at higher fidelity. Most parallel CAE simulations use scalable Linux clusters for their demanding HPC requirements, but for certain classes of CAE models, data I/O can severely degrade overall job scalability and limit overall CAE effectiveness.

Examples of I/O demanding simulations include very large DOF ANSYS Mechanical models, especially those that are nonlinear with multiple stiffness matrix formulations, and any transient CFD simulation in FLUENT where multiple solution files must be written. For this reason, ANSYS has developed parallel I/O that scales with the solvers in ANSYS Mechanical and ANSYS FLUENT, but just as parallel solver benefits require scalable clusters, parallel I/O requires that the cluster be configured with a parallel file system and storage.

Panasas offers a parallel storage capability that scales I/O and overcomes I/O bottlenecks, enabling ANSYS software to scale to its full potential. A joint study with the University of Cambridge for a large transient DES case in FLUENT 12 will be previewed to demonstrate that simulation software with parallel I/O on a parallel file system will show full parallel benefit for advanced simulations that are heavy in I/O relative to numerical operations. This webinar will also examine ANSYS workflow benefits of the Panasas solution and how the same parallel file system and shared storage provides a platform for direct post-processing without the need to transfer large files over a network.

Webcast Participants Will:

  • Learn how the combination of application software from ANSYS and Panasas parallel storage for Linux clusters delivers performance and productivity advantages for ANSYS FLUENT and ANSYS Mechanical customers.
  • Preview performance results of ANSYS FLUENT 12 from a recent study conducted with the University of Cambridge for a large transient CFD case using up to 256 processing cores of a cluster with Panasas parallel file system and storage.
  • Learn how a Panasas solution drives CAE performance and scalability, but also provides simplified, appliance-like file system management and improved data reliability.

Who Should Attend?

  • CAE engineers and management concerned with improving the HPC performance of large DOF structural anaylsis and transient CFD modeling - and driving productivity gains into ANSYS CAE workfows
  • CAE industry and research professionals in application software development and IT administration of Linux clusters and storage
