ActiveStor 14 models are based on three different types of storage blades that feature different HDD/SSD choices:
In designing ActiveStor 14, Panasas performed an extensive analysis of file system file size data from a sample of its current customers and prospects across different market verticals. Even at the most "large file" oriented customers, datasets consisted of a very high percentage of small files that took up a very small share of the total disk capacity. This called for the right blend of SATA and SSD technology.
ActiveStor 14 shelves support a total of eleven blade slots. These can be populated with 0, 1, 2, or 3 director blades per shelf, with the remaining slots filled with storage blades. In general, one director blade per shelf is recommended for throughput applications and two director blades per shelf are recommended to maximize small file and metadata performance.
Panasas recommends the following configurations by workload type and vertical market:
| Model | ActiveStor 14 | ActiveStor 14T | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity/shelf | 81.2TB | 83.0TB | 40.3TB |
| Director blades/shelf | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Storage blades/shelf | 10 | 10 | 9 |
| Storage blade model | 2x4TB SATA + 120GB SSD | 2x4TB SATA + 300GB SSD | 2x2TB SATA + 480GB SSD |
| Percent SSD capacity | 1.5% | 3.6% | 10.7% |
| Cache memory/shelf | 92GB | 92GB | 168GB |
| Workloads | Throughput-focused workloads (best $/usable TB) | Throughput and IOPS (mixed file sizes and mixed workloads) | Highest small file IOPS (and lowest $/IOP) |
| Verticals | Bioscience, Energy, Government, Manufacturing, Media, University | Bioscience, Finance, Manufacturing | Finance |
