NAS and Panasas PanFS 5.5 in the Storage Spotlight at NAB
April 22, 2014 - 7:48pm
With more than 98,000 in attendance, this year’s National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show certainly lived up to its billing as the world’s largest business-to-business media and entertainment event! I had the pleasure of joining my Panasas colleagues for what seemed like a non-stop parade of visitors looking for a better Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution for their creative and post-production workloads, along with current Panasas customers hoping for their first look at our new PanFS 5.5 operating system.
I like to think everyone got what they came for. Our in-booth live demo showcased an Avid editing suite with our ActiveStor 14 hybrid scale-out NAS system running PanFS 5.5, giving attendees a first-hand view of the sort of real-world performance and interoperability that today’s post-production workloads demand. Our first demo kicked off twenty minutes before the show ‘officially’ opened on Monday morning, and customer and partner demo’s continued non-stop until Thursday afternoon!
NAB was a key show for PanFS 5.5 after releasing it in March, and I can’t think of a better event – or a better time – to show the OS that makes Panasas storage available to the broadest range of creative and post-production workflows yet. NAS was clearly a hot topic in storage at the show, for all the reasons – including reliability, cost efficiencies and performance at scale – that make NAS a superior alternative for centralized file management in creative and post-production workflows. With both NFS and now CIFS support, PanFS 5.5 gives us full interoperability with common post-production applications, and that had a lot of NAB attendees nodding their heads.
In closing, my congratulations and gratitude to the NAB Show organizers for another outstanding event. I’m already looking forward to doing it again next year!
