SC14: HPC Storage Matters

Bill Ribera

VP of WW Sales & Field Operations

Last month the Panasas team made our way to New Orleans for SC14, this year’s edition of the outstanding annual conference and exhibition that draws professionals from around the world to learn what’s next in HPC and enterprise computing. Organizers chose “HPC Matters” as the year’s theme, and after a week spent talking with the some of the brightest minds in the industry about what high-performance computing is achieving in the real world, I couldn’t think of a more apt way to sum up what I saw and heard.

Achieving Performance at Scale: What’s Storage Got To Do with It?

Geoffrey Noer

VP of Product Management

Boosting storage performance has been a top priority ever since Panasas was founded more than ten years ago. Today, it’s more important than ever. In the IDC report “HPC End-User Study of the Storage and Interconnects Used in Technical Computing” (Sept. 2013), analysts highlighted the increasing focus that storage performance is getting with storage buyers:

Bigger Workloads, Bigger Challenges: The Graphics Industry Comes to SIGGRAPH for Solutions

Bill Ribera

VP of WW Sales & Field Operations

Earlier this month the Panasas team trekked to Vancouver, B.C. for the 41st SIGGRAPH conference and exhibition. According to organizers, this year’s gathering hosted more than 14,000 attendees from 75 countries – truly an international event and an unparalleled setting to learn more about the opportunities and challenges that are driving graphics development and video, film and video game production today.

Data Protection: A Topic Most Storage Vendors Prefer to Avoid

Geoffrey Noer

VP of Product Management

Having built a good portion of my career in the storage industry, it’s clear to me that storage vendors generally just don’t like talking about some topics. Companies aren’t shy to brag about storage throughput or IOPS performance, their attractive price per terabyte, or how their product is so easy to use. Panasas is no different here – we are also quick to tell you about the benefits in our ActiveStor platform.

Supercomputing and the Enterprise: Talking Reliability at ISC’14

Bill Ribera

VP of WW Sales & Field Operations

Another week – another big European trade show!

In late June, the Panasas team had the pleasure of participating in ISC’14: the International Supercomputing Conference in Leipzig. The show hosted a solid turnout of professionals from enterprise and research institutions as well as industry media and analysts, all there to take a deep dive into the trends and technologies that are driving this accelerating field. I daresay they were not disappointed!

Panasas and ActiveStor 16 Get Geophysical at EAGE 14

Bill Ribera

VP of WW Sales & Field Operations

Earlier this month, scientists and business leaders from the oil and gas industry came together in Amsterdam at the annual EAGE Conference and Exhibition to discuss trends and technologies in energy exploration. We were pleased to again exhibit and support this event.

Introducing ActiveStor 16 and PanFS 6.0

Geoffrey Noer

VP of Product Management

There’s no question that this is a big announcement: not only have we announced our new flagship platform ActiveStor 16 but we also announced PanFS 6.0, the biggest step forward for our storage operating system in many years.

Disruptive Change in Storage Technologies for Big Data

Garth Gibson

Co-founder and Chief Scientist

Panasas founder and chief scientist, Dr. Garth Gibson, addresses the ‘Ginormous Systems Conference’, organized  by TTI/Vanguard with a talk titled: Disruptive Change in Storage Technologies for Big Data. Garth tackles the evolution from terabytes to petabytes and on to the promise of exascale computing and how NAND flash is changing the rules along the way. Other topics include parallel file systems, object storage and the challenges of working with both very large and very small data sets in unified systems.

Big Data According to Garth Gibson and IDC

Barbara Murphy

Panasas founder and chief scientist, Dr. Garth Gibson, and Steve Conway, research vice president in IDC's high performance computing group took some time recently to discuss HPC trends and forces affecting storage in the HPC market. The role that big data plays in HPC storage, now and in future scenarios is discussed in this third and final video in this series.

Massive ActiveStor Deployment at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

Panasas Marketing

With nearly 8.5 petabytes of ActiveStor storage, the Panasas installation at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) represents one of the largest multi-location, high-performance computing (HPC) storage deployments in Great Britain. Panasas ActiveStor gives RAL a solution that offers extreme scalability and simple storage management capabilities so that scientists can focus on important research, not on cumbersome system administration.
